Dinosaur

Tue Jun 3, 2008, 11:59 AM
Reading *m-u-d-c-a-t's recent journal about his spiffy new PC.... I realized last week that mine is pretty much the same old dinosaur.

It won't even run Photoshop anymore (as of last week).

I had it built in 2003, and back then it was the kind of affordable graphic design machine I needed to do my art. Now I can't even back up anything that's still on my hard drive since I got rid of my old burning program in favour of a newer one -- which does it at a faster speed than my drive can read (so I wasted 5 DVD-R's last week lol). Plus my Windows XP is on it. Ugh not even touching Vista.

Thankfully my laptop still runs my Photoshop. But it's uncomfortable to use for long periods of time (even though I still do it haha). I've been using it for a long time to send files out and stuff since my card in my PC is really old (2003 as well haha).

I don't know what to do about a new one -- where's a cheap place to have it built, and what sort of specs/parts should go into it. I'm no techie :)

If you're doing graphics, then you'll want a lot of RAM (I'd say at least 2 GB, ideal is 4-6). Aside from that I'm pretty clueless.

Yeah.... my PC has 512. Go figure how I've managed to not kill it before now.

spending 75$ on a RAM upgrade could solve a lot of your problems.
ncix.com I love these guys, freaking adore them, and they are in the middle of Vancouver. You can build one from scratch on their website and pick it up/have it delivered, or buy a pre-built (all the catagories are there) or go into the store and yap at them about what you want.

So far I haven't had any problems with them and half the graphics department at the newspaper I worked for bought everything from them ^^

Good prices too!

Not really since my hard drive, dvd drive, and monitor are all giving me problems.

Well I would recommend if your using it for running graphics software that it should have:

2 - 4 GB of Ram
250 - 500 GB of hard drive space

at least a 256 MB graphics card But you're way better off with a 512 MB especially if you have a tablet.

the rest is window dressing and extras but a nice monitor and good burner never hurt. As long as the extra cost isn't insane the more ram and bigger HD the better and will help prolong the next replacement.

Also in case you didn't know because you are in Canada, you can claim the computer as a business expense on your taxes as long as you're claiming your freelance pay and filing a business claim. So you'll see a good chunk of that money back come tax time.
Ooooooh that's a good point, since I did claim my freelance work for 2007.

Actually, I think a new equation would better explain it:

Vista > Satan
